Welcome to the 2025 STEP Alumni Conference:
Rooted and Rising: Teaching with Purpose in Times of Change
Our 8th annual alumni conference is designed to facilitate your engagement with other STEP alumni who are actively contributing to systemic change in education. This event will also provide opportunities to connect and network with other educators in the field, fostering connections with colleagues from your cohort and beyond. We aim to enhance your experience by supporting your personal journeys while encouraging active participation in current educational discourse.
This year's theme is Rooted and Rising: Teaching with Purpose in Times of Change.
STEP enthusiastically welcomes this year's keynote speaker, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, to speak on teacher education in California and the role teachers can play in current times.

Come and learn how STEP is currently approaching Ethnic Studies and cultural and historical responsive education. In this workshop, you'll get a brief overview of STEP's program/course offerings in both Secondary and Elementary, as well as the opportunity to experience some arts integration and community-building with fellow participants, as we explore our individual and collective journeys around this work.

Workshop 2: Project-Based Learning for Global Climate Justice

Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives and Professional Faculty - ; PBL for
Project-based learning empowers students to explore complex and critical challenges such as global climate justice. PBL positions students in real roles to explore real challenges and to make real impact. In this session, you'll experience a short project launch experience, be introduced to a framework for planning a project, and have an opportunity to generate project ideas. The session is informed by the hundreds of educators we've worked with across the globe, doing innovative work with their students. You'll also learn about additional resources related to project-based learning for global climate justice.

Workshop 5: We Are Our Own Best Resources: Reflections on AI and Our Changing Field

AI is reshaping schools faster than we can catch our breath. This gathering is not for quick responses. Instead, we are slowing down to sit with one another and ask: How are we feeling in this season of our professional lives? What do we sense our field is losing and gaining as outside forces impact it? What new possibilities might emerge when we imagine together, grounded in our shared expertise and lived experiences? Come with curiosity and a story to tell. Leave with more clarity on the collective view. Before we fix, let鈥檚 share stories, listen, and imagine together.

Workshop 6: Moving at the Speed of Trust: Cultivating Authentic Connections for Restorative Justice

Learn how a restorative framework of trust fosters successful school changes, and prevents burnout and moral injury, especially for BIPOC educators, through a trust assessment and pod-mapping activities.

Workshop 7: Parents as Co-Teachers: Collaborating with Families to Meet the Moment

Over several years, the relationships between families and schools has deteriorated due to low trust and dissatisfaction between all parties, all worsened by the current political climate. Instead of moving away from each other, this moment compels us to draw closer together because kids need a village in order to thrive. This workshop looks at ways that educators can see families as co-teachers, equally invested and excited for their child's education, with strategies and examples to build on.
