Checking up on adolescent health鈥攚here teachers and doctors intersect

The way a student shows up at school can tell a lot about his or her health, according to 海角乱伦社区 pediatrics professor Neville Golden.

鈥淣ot everyone attends school every day鈥攁nd some are attending school and stressed out about it, not getting enough sleep because of the pressures,鈥 he said on this episode of School鈥檚 In. 鈥淎s a doctor, your role is to find out why.鈥

Golden joined GSE Dean Dan Schwartz and Senior Lecturer Denise Pope in the studio to talk about why he trains future doctors to ask about school during children鈥檚 routine office visits鈥攁nd why health problems like eating disorders are on the rise among adolescents.

鈥淲e鈥檙e now recognizing that eating disorders are not confined to young, thin adolescent girls,鈥 said Golden, who also serves as the chief of adolescent medicine at Lucile Packard Children鈥檚 Hospital and director of the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship Training Program at 海角乱伦社区. 鈥淲e see eating disorders in boys and girls, in all socioeconomic groups, and in people of all sizes.鈥
