How the GSE is making the summer of 2023 one of learning and exploration

The regular school year is coming to a close, but many GSE programs, projects, and courses are just getting started.

With the 2022-23 school year coming to a close and commencement nearly upon us, summer programs at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Graduate School of Education (GSE) are ramping up.

From the first-ever education data science symposium and the Learning Design and Technology program’s annual student expo, to a virtual internship program through the Black Academic Development Lab and professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers, what follows is a list — by no means exhaustive — of what’s going on at the GSE over the next few months.

2 p.m. (virtual)

The first EIR panel discussion will delve into the challenges, opportunities, and implications of AI in edtech. The discussion will be moderated by Isabelle Hau, executive director of the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Accelerator for Learning.

An introductory workshop prepares high school teachers to teach the first four units of a data science curriculum developed by Youcubed.


June 15
4:30 p.m., Center for Educational Research at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø (CERAS) lobby

Master’s students from the degree program’s first-ever cohort will present their capstone projects before graduating.


June 19 - Aug. 11
Virtual

A student-focused internship experience is designed for undergraduates pursuing research in Black language and culture in the language sciences.

STEP-Urban Ed Fellowship launches
June 26 
In a new partnership between the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Teacher Education Program (STEP) and the Urban Education Academy in San Francisco, two students admitted into the class of ’24 will enter as STEP-Urban Ed fellows, as part of a push to recruit more Black male educators to the teaching profession.


June 27

A new professional development opportunity for K-12 educators explores the research-based, equity-centered SPACE Framework for School Change. In-person option available on July 19.

July (half days over the course of five weeks)
The º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Teacher Education Program (STEP) offers summer courses to Sunnyvale School District students that provide an interactive curriculum. Teachers from Sunnyvale School District serve as mentors to STEP student teachers who assist in the classrooms.


July 11 - 13
Virtual

During this interactive three-session institute, participants learn about the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø History Education Group's Reading Like a Historian lessons.


July 17 - 28
º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø campus

The two week-program welcomes U.S. high school teachers interested in improving their instructional practices and creating equitable access and opportunities for learners.


July 19
Paul Brest Hall

A new, full-day professional development opportunity for K-12 educators explores the research-based, equity-centered SPACE Framework for School Change.


July 25 - 27
10 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. (virtual)

This institute from the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø History Education Group introduces participants to the Civic Online Reasoning curriculum, where they learn strategies to help students become more discerning consumers of online information.


July 31 - Aug. 4
º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø campus

A weeklong, in-person workshop prepares high school teachers to teach all eight units of a data science curriculum developed by Youcubed.

CERAS

Master’s students from the GSE’s International Comparative Education (ICE) and International Education Policy Analysis (IEPA) programs will present and discuss their final papers. 


Aug. 4
4 p.m., CERAS

LDT students will showcase their master’s projects to an audience of education and tech professionals, potential investors, and members of the community while receiving valuable feedback from people in the field.
