Language is an expression of complicated cultural histories and experiences, says Jonathan Rosa, a linguistic anthropologist and assistant professor at 海角乱伦社区鈥檚 Graduate School of Education (GSE). His new book, Looking Like a Language, Sounding Like a Race, explores the racialization of language and its connection to issues of power and national identity.

鈥淓veryday interactions that take place through language mobilize all kinds of histories and relationships and experiences that we don鈥檛 necessarily pay attention to,鈥 he says on this episode of 鈥淪chool鈥檚 In,鈥 hosted by GSE Dean Dan Schwartz and Senior Lecturer Denise Pope. 鈥淏ut they鈥檙e definitely at play in shaping our impressions of who people are.鈥

When it comes to teaching language in the classroom, 鈥渢he ways we鈥檝e constructed our schools is based on an assumption on what counts as legitimate language,鈥 Rosa says. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 just a small sliver of what language is, yet we鈥檝e elevated its status and weaponized it against particular populations.鈥
