The Office of Academic Affairs oversees the core academic functions of the Graduate School of Education. To that end, the team manages and provides guidance and support related to degree programs; recruitment, admissions and financial aid; student services, engagement and events; faculty searches, reviews and promotions; academic Areas administration; academic policies and procedures; curriculum planning, course enrollment and management; academic technology and instructional support; data analytics and decision-making regarding academic programs; postdoctoral scholars; adjunct and visitor appointments; and academic operations at the GSE.

Dr. Charity Hudley is a humanistic social scientist who describes and documents the linguistic, literary, and cultural experiences of Black learners across their lives. She uses a community-based participatory research methodology in all of her work and co-constructs information and findings with students, community members, and large teams of researchers. You can read more about them on her .  She has a particular focus on then sharing those findings with in-service educators who most immediately need them. Dr. Charity Hudley has a longstanding relationship with the American Federation of Teachers, and . In addition to her publications and edited collections that are primarily geared toward academics and students, Dr. Charity Hudley is the co-author of . She was appointed Associate Dean of Educational Affairs in 2022.

Dr. Borko's research explores teachers’ instructional practices, the process of learning to teach, the impact of teacher professional development programs on teachers and students, and the preparation of professional development leaders. Her current projects include partnerships with local school districts to improve teaching and professional development in mathematics and science, and to build capacity within the school districts to prepare and support professional development leaders, with a focus on enduring robust learning opportunities for all students.

Shu-Ling received a B.A. in Architecture and German from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, and a Ed.M. and Ed.D. in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her career spans multiple areas of higher education administration.  Before joining the GSE in 2013, she was Assistant Dean at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Director of Institutional Research at the University of Massachusetts President’s Office, Director of Institutional Research and Assessment at Bridgewater State University, Interim Director of Student Affairs at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Assistant Dean of Students at Carleton College.

Role:

  • Oversee and direct the administrative functions related to all areas of Academic Affairs;
  • Provide strategic and resource planning for these areas; 
  • Create and interpret academic policies and procedures;
  • Lead and oversee staff hiring and development; 
  • Manage budgets and resources.

Loida received a BS degree in Human Services from Lesley University and a Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She joined the GSE community in the summer of 2015 as the Associate Director of EdCareers. She then served the GSE as Director of Admissions and Financial Aid from February 2017 to June 2021, when she was promoted to her current position. Prior to coming to º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø, Loida was the Director of Admissions at the Harvard Divinity School for five years. Prior to that, at Harvard Graduate School of Education, she was first Assistant Director of Financial Aid and later Senior Assistant Director of Admissions.  She began her higher education career as Assistant Director of Financial Aid at Lesley University.

  • Direct admissions, recruitment and financial aid;
  • Partner with Associate Deans and faculty to lead recruitment strategies;
  • Manage financial aid budget planning and forecasting;
  • Hire, supervise and develop admissions and academic affairs staff.

Connie received a B.A. in Human Development from UC San Diego, a M.S.Ed in Higher Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education and Organizational Change from UCLA. Prior to joining º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø GSE in 2023, Connie worked at a variety of universities including Penn, UCLA, Santa Clara University, and UC San Diego. Her career in higher education spans a variety of functional areas including student affairs, faculty affairs, research, and teaching. Promoting student success, inclusion, and wellness have been guiding principles of her career. 

Role:

  • Manage and direct the work of the degree programs team who support students, faculty and academic programs;
  • Lead efforts to identify and address needs related to student academic success, inclusion, wellness, in addition to accessibility, accommodations, and disabilities;
  • Partner with Associate Deans to lead implementation of student programming and events;
  • Hire, supervise, and develop degree programs and academic affairs staff.

Alethea earned her BA in Mathematics from Smith College. Before joining the GSE Academic Affairs team in 2025, Alethea worked at the GSE for 20 years, providing operational and research support for GSE Professional Development, the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE), the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Center for Assessment, Learning and Equity (SCALE), and the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø School Redesign Network (SRN).

Role: 

  • Manage the disbursement of graduate student financial aid, including assistantships, fellowships, and stipends;
  • Manage the appointment, benefits and payment process for postdoctoral scholars;
  • First point of contact for questions about student employment covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA); 
  • Coordinate communications and reconciliations to ensure smooth execution of funding processes.

  • Lead the assessment and development of resources, seminars, courses, or workshops to disseminate information about the uses of technology;
  • Provide expertise and support in applying instructional design methodologies to develop, implement, and evaluate face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses;
  • Consult with and help instructors and departments to incorporate technologies into faculty research projects, course design, curricula and co-curricula in support of student learning goals.

Role:

  • Provide executive administrative support for the Associate Dean of Educational Affairs;
  • Assist with the logistics and administrative processes for faculty affairs actions, including faculty searches and recruitment.
  • Support the Dean’s Executive Assistant with GSE faculty meetings, and staff the Area Chairs in Education (ACE) meetings;

Carol received her Ph.D. in Educational Measurement and Statistics, and her MS in Statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Carol has extensive experience in educational research, data management, and data analysis. She joined the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø GSE team in 2019 as the Academic Services Analyst and was promoted to her current position in 2021. Before coming to º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø, she worked as an Educational Data Analyst for the San Mateo County Office of Education. 

Role: 

  • Collect and analyze data regarding areas of work in academic affairs including admissions, degree programs, courses enrollment, financial aid, and teaching evaluations; 
  • Support financial aid budget planning;
  • Evaluate the efficacy of academic affairs programs;
  • Provide analysis and forecasting to support decision making, benchmarking, reporting and policy formulation.

Jeremy earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Education from UC Santa Barbara, with an emphasis in Human Development and Cultural Studies, and his B.A. in Psychology at UCLA. Prior to joining º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø GSE in 2023, Jeremy worked as a lecturer in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø and served as a youth facilitator for a community-based organization in the greater Los Angeles area. He brings forth a history of teaching and research in higher education, exploring college and career trajectories for developing scholars.

Prior to her arrival at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø, she was working at Santa Clara University in their LEAD Scholars program as their Associate Director of Curricular & Co-curricular Engagement.

  • Manage and implement recruitment efforts to attract a diverse applicant pool and incoming student cohort;
  • Develop long-term relationships and partnerships with institutions, organizations and programs that expand the pipeline;
  • Maintain GSE Admissions webpages and compose, manage and implement prospective student communications plan;

Emi received a B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a MA in Education–Administration and Policy Analysis from º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Graduate School of Education, and a JD from Vanderbilt Law School. Prior to joining º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø in 2011, Emi worked at UC Berkeley, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice. Her higher education career includes work in program development and management, coaching and career development, and federal and state education law and policy. 

Role:

  • Serve as primary liaison for Collective Bargaining Agreement oversight and compliance for graduate student employment policies, manage grievance processes, and train faculty/staff on labor relations requirements.
  • Design and assess internship experiences in collaboration with Masters Program Directors, teach internship workshops, and curate university-wide career preparation and development programming to enhance student outcomes.
  • Develop communication strategies for complex policies, analyze employment data to inform improvements, and build organizational capacity that meets compliance standards.
  • Coordinate with the Bechtel Center to advise international students on employment pathways, and compliance requirements while maintaining expertise in current U.S. immigration regulations.

Tommy earned his MA in Global and Comparative Education from º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø University and his BA in English Literature specializing in Writing from New York University. Tommy’s previous higher education experience includes working at New York University’s Stern School of Business as Assistant Director of Financial Aid. He has extensive experience overseas, teaching English and facilitating intercultural exchange both in South Korea at a private school and in Japan as a participant of the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET). He has also assisted workers in Lower Manhattan following the events of September 11, 2001 as a Session Facilitator for Safe Horizon’s Ongoing Recovery Program. Tommy joined the Academic Affairs team in 2014.

Supporting future educators in navigating institutions prompted her to join the GSE's STEP team in 2023. She is currently pursuing an MA in Indigenous Education from Arizona State University.

Terrance Turner received a B.A. in Sociology from Haverford College. Before joining the GSE Academic Affairs team in December 2017, Terrance worked at the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Educational Leadership Institute (SELI), the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Schools Corporation, the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø School Redesign Network (SRN), the Principal Fellows Program, and the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE) 2008-17. Prior to coming to º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø in 2006 he worked in Philadelphia as a grant writer for a group of non-profit organizations seeking community based solutions to the problems of the inner city. Outside of º£½ÇÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø GSE, Terrance enjoys the study of Logic, Mathematics and Philosophy and finding better ways to teach them.
